Talsassa oli artikkeli, jossa todettiin rahan perässä juoksemisen menneen pois muodista. Konsulttiyritys Syfronin kouluttaja, teologi Antti Kylliäinen näkee työikäisten ajattelutavassa tapahtuneen yhden modernin ajan merkittävimmistä muutoksista:

Juuri näin. Totesin ilokseni olleeni muodikas koko ikäni, sillä en juurikaan perusta rahasta. Saan elämääni sisällön musiikista, kirjoista, taiteesta, yhdessäolosta perheen ja ystävien kanssa, matkailusta, hyvästä ruuasta ja juomasta. Uurastan hyvinvointini eteen saavuttaakseni edelle mainitsemia asioita. Mutta toistaiseksi olen joutunut maksamaan matkani, viinini ja kirjani rahalla:(

Kylliäinen sanoo, että uurastaminen on turhaa; vähemmälläkin tulee toimeen. Tästäkin olen samaa mieltä. Muodikas downgreidaaminen on päivän sana. Mutta rimaa laskeakseen se on pitänyt ensin saada nostetuksi riittävälle tasolle.

Yhtä kaikki. Nousukauden aikana esimerkiksi mainosalalla huippusuunnittelijat mittaavat arvoaan vaihtamalla työpaikkaansa ja samalla nostamalla palkkaansa kohti korkeuksia kerran vuodessa. Olisiko järkevää jättää joskus vaihtaminen väliin ja keskittyä edellisen työpaikan ja oman hyvinvoinnin kasvattamiseen? Uskon näin.

"Mutta... Mitä sinä sitten teet muuna aikana?
Meksikolainen katsoi amerikkalaista ja vastasi: "Nukun myöhään, kalastan hieman ja leikin lapsieni kanssa, siestaan vaimoni kanssa ja käyn kylällä joka ilta, juon vähän viiniä ja soittelen kitaraa kaverien kanssa. Minulla on ihan täysi ja kiireinen elämä, hyvä herra."
Amerikkalainen nauroi ja suoristi hieman selkää: "Hyvä herra, minä olen Harvardin M.B.A. ja minä voin auttaa sinua. Sinun pitäisi kalastaa pidempään ja ostaa tuotoilla isompi vene. Vähemmällä todellakin pärjää. Asuin lapsuuteni nykymittapuun mukaan valtavassa maalaistalossa. Neliöitä oli likemmäs tuhat. Koko perhe vietti suurimman osan vapaa-ajastaan kuitenkin keittiössä. 3/4 talosta oli käytännössä juhlia lukuunottamatta tyhjillään. Talosta ei ollut rakennettu aikanaan niin isoa tarpeeseen vaan näyttämisen halusta. Sama oireyhtymä on monen ihmisen elämässä. Pitää näyttää. Kuka tarvitsee Eirassa katumaasturia?
